A marine search-and-rescue operation in the Sooke Basin ended happily Monday after 40-year-old James Milito was located safe some distance away in a cabin.
He contacted police after hearing news reports that searchers were looking for him.
The search began at 9:50 a.m. Monday when a resident reported seeing a drifting canoe. A paddle was also found washed up on shore, said Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.
Milito lives on a nearby sailboat, which searchers checked.
