The parking lot at Sombrio Beach will have restricted access over the Victoria Day long weekend in an effort to discourage the sort of illegal activity that has plagued the area in the past.

A temporary closing of the 2.5-kilometre gravel road from Highway 14 to the parking lot, located at the Sombrio Beach trailhead connecting to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, will be in place from 6 a.m. Friday to midnight Monday.

The move comes after large parties and vandalism created problems at the popular beach, but increased security since 2012 has held such problems in check. The B.C. government, the RCMP and the Pacheedaht First Nation have contributed to the successful security effort.

Other sites in Juan de Fuca Provincial Park will be open for public use, including the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and designated camping areas at Sombrio Beach. Also, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail’s three other trailheads — at China Beach, Parkinson Creek and Botanical Beach — will remain accessible by vehicle. — Times Colonist
