The capital region’s police emergency response team including a negotiator remain at an Esquimalt apartment building Monday night following the drive-by shooting of a doorman at Club 9one9 in downtown Victoria in the early morning.

Police say they believe a suspect in the shooting is in the building.

With the help of a canine unit, police have arrested a woman who they describe as an alleged accomplice.

A vehicle matching the description of one that witnesses said was involved in the shooting was spotted by police.

Officers chased it and later found it abandoned outside a residence at Shelbourne and Ryan streets. That residence has proven to be unrelated to shooting, police said.

The car was seized along with a weapon that appeared to be used in the shooting, police said.

Heavy Metal Kings, an East Coast U.S. rap duo, was wrapping up its set at Club 9one9, inside the Strathcona Hotel on Douglas Street, when someone drove a black compact car up to the front of the concert venue, stopped and opened fire. At least two doormen were there.

The shooting happened about 1 a.m.

Grant Olson, co-owner of the Strathcona, said the suspect and a woman had been escorted out of the venue shortly before the show ended. The suspect would have been patted down and had his identification scanned, Olson said. The couple were angry and the suspect returned in a car, Olson said, adding the escalation in anger was incomprehensible.

The 25-year-old shooting victim was released from hospital Monday afternoon.

His mother is flying to VIctoria to be with her son.

The shooting victim is a good, honest young man working at the club to help pay for his return to unversity, his mother said.

No one else was injured by the spray of bullets at the club — but easily could have been, said police.

Police responded to 911 calls immediately after the shooting and flooded the area.

Police are now at 948 Macaulay East apartment block, on Esquimalt Road, hoping to arrest the suspect.

Douglas Street in front of the Strathcona, northbound and southbound, was closed for most of the day while police investigated.

Police said they have several witnesses.

The shooting does not appear to be gang-related, police said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting to call on their non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 or anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
