Danny (The Hurricane) Halmo, seen here with an RCMP officer in Langford, is a man with a mission.

A man in a red superhero costume riding a Segway on the Trans-Canada Highway in Langford caught the attention of motorists and police on Thursday.

West Shore RCMP Const. Alex Bérubé confirmed the man is Delta resident Danny (The Hurricane) Halmo, who is riding a Segway 500 kilometres from Salt Spring Island to Campbell River to Victoria in a bid to set a Guinness World Record for the longest ride on the two-wheel electric vehicle.

While in Victoria, Halmo hopes to deliver a petition advocating for Segways to be legal on B.C. streets to Premier Christy Clark’s office.

Officers pulled over a man wearing a red and black body suit complete with fake abs and a utility belt about noon, Bérubé said.

The Motor Vehicle Act does not clearly cover Segways, he said, but they are not permitted on sidewalks, bike lanes or road shoulders.

“Under these circumstances, the officer used discretion and let him finish his remaining two kilometres [of] his journey with a warning,” Bérubé said.

Halmo wore Captain America and Flash costumes on other legs of the journey.

The 57-year-old has set two previous Guinness World Records — one on an electric bicycle and one in an electric car — and has a third pending after covering 214 kilometres on a Segway in 24 hours.
