Nanaimo teen Makayla Chang has been missing for 12 days, and police have not been able to find the man she is believed to be with.

Police say Makayla might have been befriended by 53-year-old Steven Michael Bacon of Nanaimo.

“We have information they may be together. We’re hoping he can help locate her,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien. “Her family is very worried about her. We just need her to call them, or us, and to see her. She’s not in trouble.”

Makayla, 16, was last seen in downtown Nanaimo on March 17.

She is five-foot-one and 110 pounds with hazel eyes and hair that has been dyed red. She has glasses and multiple facial piercings and is known to change her looks with wigs and sometimes dresses as a male, police said. She is believed to have been wearing a grey hoodie and multi-coloured leggings with stars and planets. She sometimes goes by the names Kayla and Finn.

“She was very active on social media and that has fallen off completely,” O’Brien said.

The serious crime team is investigating and police across the Island, mainland and U.S. have been alerted as well.

O’Brien said Makayla has not been spotted on B.C. Ferries surveillance cameras, but might have travelled to the mainland.

Police have also not been able to find Bacon since Makayla was reported missing by her family.

“We’d very much like to talk to him,” O’Brien said.

Bacon is described as five-foot-10 and 210 pounds with a white balding buzz cut and yellowing goatee. He has a teardrop tattoo under his left eye and another tattoo on the back of his right hand.

Nanaimo RCMP ask anyone who has seen Makayla or Bacon or has information about either person’s whereabouts to call them at 250-754-2345.
