Chan was struck as she was walking along Tyndall Avenue. A car driven by a woman in her 40s struck the curb and overturned, hitting a garbage recepticle, a bus stop and Chan.

Original story

An 86-year-old Saanich woman died Sunday after she was struck by a car that went out of control on Tyndall Avenue, said Sgt. Steve Eassie of Saanich police.

Investigators determined that a car driven by a 43-year-old Saanich woman suddenly crossed the centre line, struck a curb, tree, cement garbage recepticle and the elderly woman who was walking on the sidewalk.

The driver, who was alone in the car, was taken to hospital but did not have serious injuries.

Cause of the crash is under investigation. One of the factors being examined is whether the driver suffered a medical problem prior to losing control.

A mechanical inspection has been ordered for the car.

The victim’s name was not released by police. The crash is under investigation by Saanich police and the B.C. Coroners Service.
