Saanich police officer sanctioned for impaired driving

A Saanich police officer has been handed a 90-day roadside prohibition for driving while impaired.

Sgt. Dean Jantzen confirmed that the officer was pulled over by Sidney/North Saanich RCMP several weeks ago.

“This is Motor Vehicle Act incident — it’s not a criminal complaint,” Jantzen said Friday evening.

The Office of Police Complaints Commission is investigating, and Saanich police department is conducting an internal review, he said.

He would not divulge details such as the gender, rank or how many years of service the officer has.

Under B.C.’s drunk driving laws, police have discretion to give first-time offenders who fail a roadside sobriety test a 90-day driving ban and $500 fine. — Times Colonist
