A man stopped by Saanich police last weekend for an expired licence plate diverted the officers' attention when he volunteered that there were no drugs in the car.
The statement immediately raised the officers' curiousity about the man, who said he was unemployed, and his vehicle, Sgt. Dean Jantzen said in a news release.
A search turned up $3,050 in cash and what appeared to be cocaine. The car was towed so it could be searched more thoroughly.
A 24-year-old Saanich resident was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court.
