Saanich has extended the deadline for proposals from outside experts to improve the municipality’s controversial Environmental Development Permit Area Bylaw to Oct. 25.

Council passed the bylaw on March 12, 2012. Ongoing controversy about its implementation led council to vote in May for an independent review.

The bylaw aims to protect sensitive ecosystems by restricting what more than 2,000 property owners can do to their properties. Several residents have expressed concern that the bylaw could interfere with future development.

Included in the scope of the review will be how other municipalities deal with such bylaws. It will also include feedback from the public.

Once a consultant is hired, work is expected to begin in December and be completed by end of July 2017.
