The slide of about 500 kilograms of rock landed near the first curve heading into Goldstream Park, just north of Ice Cream Mountain.
It was “very fortunate” that no one was hurt, said Cpl. Antonio Hernandez of West Shore RCMP. “Our members were en route on an unrelated matter and stumbled upon it,” Hernandez said.
West Shore RCMP and Langford fire department crews stopped traffic and Mainroad crews cleared the rubble.
A Transportation Ministry engineer was called to check the cliff face for stability, but the analysis was inconclusive. A geotechnical expert was called in about 5:30 p.m. to give another opinion.
Vehicles were backed up for several kilometres in both directions. Motorists were restricted to single-lane alternating traffic until the area was deemed safe.
