Another $1,000 has been added to the reward in the case of the Oak Bay raccoons with missing paws, bringing the total to $4,500.

A $1,500 reward for helping to find the person or persons responsible was put in place last month, with $1,000 coming from the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals and $500 from an Oak Bay resident.

Another $2,000 from supporters in the Oak Bay area was announced this week, and the association said media coverage prompted another $1,000 donated by a local resident.

Association spokesman Adrian Nelsonsaid the missing paws could be the result of a leg-hold trap.

The first reports of a raccoon missing a paw surfaced in the Haultain Street-Kings Road-Epworth Street area in May. Oak Bay police warn that a leg-hold trap could pose a danger to children and pets.

Contact Oak Bay police at 250-592-2424 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) with any information. More details on the reward are available from the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals at 604-435-1850.
