RCMP warn drivers to avoid Malahat today if possible, due to heavy snow and slippery conditions

A man fell off the Bastion Street overpass in Nanaimo Friday night and died.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP are warning drivers that if they don’t have to be on the Malahat to avoid the dangerous route.

The curvy road shut down just before noon as fire crews get several cars out of the ditch, but the closure south of Shawnigan Lake Road isn’t expected to last long, said a member in Shawnigan Lake dispatch.

So far there have been no injuries, but there is heavy snow and the road is extremely slippery. Only a number of minor accidents have been reported.
