Ray Bernoties, a 25-year RCMP veteran, has been named the new deputy chief of the Oak Bay Police Department.

He replaces Kent Thom, who retired in February after nine and a half years as deputy chief.

Bernoties, who will start on May 15, is currently a chief superintendent and Island District commander with the RCMP and president of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police.

Bernoties said Oak Bay is his home, his parents live there and his children go to school there. He said he is looking forward to helping build on the police department’s many strengths.

Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen said in a statement that Bernoties is well-suited for his new position.
