Those parking long term in city parkades will pay more beginning this month as the city tries to free up parking downtown for more casual users.

Victoria councillors approved the rates in February.

While the first hour will remain free in parkades and the second and third hours will be billed at $2 an hour, the rate will jump to $3 an hour for the fourth hour and beyond.

The maximum per day will be $14.50 at all parkades, except for $16 at Yates Street. Hourly rates continue to be billed in 15-minute increments. The motorcycle day rate remains at $4.

Monthly parking fee increases at parkades include Yates Street and Broughton Street going to $200 from $160, View Street to $200 from $175, Johnson Street to $170 from $140 and Centennial Square to $150 from $110. Monthly parking rates have not changed since 2007.

Hourly rates at two of the city’s three surface lots — Wharf Street and the Royal Theatre — are up 25 cents to $2.50 per hour and the day rate changes to $15 from $13.50. Royal Athletic Park lot rates remain the same.

Most on-street parking zone rates remain the same, except for 24-hour zones which are a daily maximum of $9 and $1 per 20 minutes at meters (previously $7.50 and 50 cents respectively).

The city oversees nearly 4,200 parking spots downtown in parkades, surface lots and on streets.
