Police seize sawed-off shotgun, other weapons in Cook Street apartment search

Saanich Police seized a sawed-off shotgun, bear spray and brass knuckles from a Cook Street apartment Saturday night.

Police would not release details on why they entered the suite in the 3200 block of Cook Street, near Tolmie Avenue. However, a search warrant was executed around 10 p.m. by Saanich Police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team.

No one was home at the time, but the 35-year-old male tenant turned himself in without incident when he learned of the search taking place in his apartment. It is unknown if he is the only occupant, said Saanich Police Staff Sgt. Scott Treble.

The tenant has previous criminal history for mischief and possession of brass knuckles — a prohibited weapon.

He was released on promise to appear in court in early April, and police are recommending several weapons-related charges to Crown Counsel.

Police say the Saanich man has a number of bail conditions for contact with witnesses, alcohol and weapons.

Saanich Police are continuing the investigation.
