A fatal shooting inside a home on the 700-block of Cameo Street is being investigated by Saanich police and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.

Police were called to the house at 751 Cameo St. Tuesday at 7:16 a.m. to investigate. Police have not said who called 911 or commented on the identity of the victim.

The two-storey, single-family home is in a quiet neighbourhood a block east of the Patricia Bay Highway, near Quadra Street.

Saanich police spokesman Sgt. John Price confirmed one person is in custody and the public is not at risk. Price would not confirm the age or sex of the victim or accused.

He said they knew each other but would not comment on their relationship.

The home was surrounded by police tape and the street blocked off to traffic for most of the day. Price said investigators are waiting to obtain a search warrant to gather more evidence.

He would not say if a firearm has been found but said there were reports of “a shot or shots fired” in the morning.

The B.C. Coroners Service said they have been made aware of the death and will assist in the investigation. Price said a forensic autopsy will be conducted in the coming days.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is typically called in to help investigate homicides on the Island. Saanich police’s general investigation section, forensic identification unit and street crime unit are also assisting.

Price said he wasn’t aware of any prior police involvement with the home or indication of mental illness on the part of the residents.

“We’re not aware of any police history involving that home,” Price said.

Police have 24 hours from the time of an arrest to lay a charge; otherwise they have to release the individual from custody. Price said it’s still early in the investigation and more information will be released Wednesday morning.
