The two occupants of an ultralight aircraft that went down off the north Island Monday afternoon escaped without injury.

The plane “ditched” at Smith Sound, about 40 nautical miles northeast of Port Hardy, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre said Monday.

A mayday was issued. A Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo plane, stationed in Comox, and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Gordon Reid were sent to the site.

“The people were found on the shore and there were no injuries. The aircraft is in the water upside down,” a centre official said.

The plane’s occupants were returned to Vancouver Island.
