Pianos keyed up for outdoor music fun in Oak Bay

Wildly painted pianos have once again made their summer escape to outdoor locations in Oak Bay.

Wildly painted pianos have once again made their summer escape to outdoor locations in Oak Bay.

Anyone passing by three waterfront locations, along with one in Estevan Village, is free to tickle the keys of pianos donated by residents and transformed by artists, said Oak Bay arts laureate Barbara Adams, who hopes to enhance “the joy of art” in the community.

Artistic themes range from Homage to Elton John by Sherryl Hustins at Loon Bay by the Victoria Yacht Club to the Oak Bay motto Fun Under the Oaks in Estevan Village by Robert Amos — it’s the only instrument taken inside at night.

Perched at Turkey Head is Daciano Oana’s Whimsical Sea and at Cattle Point, Jim McFarland has created a plein air beach scene overlooking the real thing.

If you really love one, you can buy it at the end of the summer through Parks and Recreation Oak Bay. Two of last year’s pianos were sold for $2,000 to help cover the cost of the undertaking, for which artists receive an honorarium and the cost of their materials. Tuning is provided courtesy of Tom Lee Music.

The musical project is a way to heighten awareness of public art and the connections between art, the community and the environment, Adams said.

Last year, there were four complaints about the pianos, mainly from people who didn’t appreciate being so close to impromptu playing, along with 500 positive comments, she said.

With the exception of the Estevan instrument, the two-month installations have been rotated from last year’s locations.

A public kick-off celebration is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Saturday in front of the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, which features the sculpture Ice Princess by Armando Barbon.

A trail map featuring all installations will be provided.

  • Oak Bay Village Sculpture Walk: 10 small sculptures throughout village
