The Victoria Pet Food Bank, which serves pets of people in need, is reeling after a break-in at its storage shed in Sooke was discovered Wednesday.
Fifty 15-kilogram bags of dog food and 10 eight-kilogram bags of cat food were taken from the Throup Road shed, along with other items such as pet treats and dog coats, said Margarita Dominguez. The supplies represented the pet-food bank’s reserve for the next two months.
“It’s just terrible,” Dominguez said. “It’s just devastating. I can’t even imagine who can do something like that.”
The theft has been reported to Sooke RCMP, she said.
Dominguez said distribution takes place at sites such as the Rock Bay Landing shelter, and there is also door-to-door delivery to 30 families.
Despite the theft, the pet-food bank will go ahead with plans to hold a Halloween Dog Party at Clover Point this weekend, she said. The dress-up event for dogs will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on either Saturday or Sunday, depending on weather, Dominguez said.
“If it’s raining on Saturday, we’ll do it on Sunday,” she said.
