A ceremony was held in Port Renfrew Sunday to mark the official opening of a water treatment and distribution system for the Pacheedaht First Nation.

Completion of the new system, built with the assistance of a $3.7-million federal grant, means the days of water shortages in the summer months, poor water quality and unsafe conditions are in the past, Chief Jeff Jones said in prepared remarks.

“Investing in water systems like the one at Pacheedaht First Nation represents one more step the Government of Canada has taken as it renews its nation-to-nation relationship with First Nations,” said federal Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett, who was in Port Renfrew for the ceremony.
