On Remembrance Day, free Greater Victoria bus service for military

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces — past and present — are welcome to board B.C. Transit buses and handyDART services without charge on Remembrance Day.

The free rides are open to anyone in uniform or presenting their Canadian Forces identification. That includes current serving armed forces cards, retired military cards, Royal Canadian Legion jackets and applies to elderly veterans who served but do not have documents with them.

The Nov. 11 free rides apply to buses and handyDART services.

It’s a thank you to those who served from the Greater Victoria Transit Commission, which is encouraging people to use transit to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies.

HandyDART bookings on short notice shouldn’t be an issue because many programs normally attended by handyDART users will not be running on the statutory holiday, a Transit spokesman said.

B.C. Transit is also encouraging operators to stop their buses at 11 a.m. for the traditional minute of silence in memory of Canada’s war veterans and active military members, if it is safe to do so.

Buses will run on a Sunday schedule on Nov. 11.
