Oil on stove caused Market Square fire, inspector says

It appears that a pot of oil left on a hot stove caused the January fire that shut Cafe Mexico and its neighbours in Market Square. The fire spread from the stove to the rest of the kitchen, Victoria Fire Department Insp. Megan Sabell said.

It appears that a pot of oil left on a hot stove caused the January fire that shut Cafe Mexico and its neighbours in Market Square.

The fire spread from the stove to the rest of the kitchen, Victoria Fire Department Insp. Megan Sabell said.

Workers remain on site at the landmark building, clearing out debris from the blaze. The overall damage value is still being determined.

Cafe Mexico and its sibling, Cafe MexiGO, have been shut since the fire on Jan. 20.

Next-door neighbour, Paboom Home Imports, at 1437 Store St., plans to reopen Saturday with a sale.

Pacific Rim College, located above the restaurant, also sustained damage but has been working out of other locations within Market Square.
