Tuesday: Victoria International Airport is shrouded in fog.

Fog is playing havoc with flights in and out Victoria International Airport this morning. Officials advise passengers to check the status of their flights with the airport or airlines.

Several flights have been cancelled or delayed.

Thick heavy fog socked in the airport Tuesday at about 5 p.m., preventing incoming flights from landing.

“The planes never arrived,” said James Bogusz, the airport’s vice-president of operations and development.

As a result, there were fewer planes at the Victoria airport this morning to take departing travellers.

“If a flight didn’t get in late last night it wouldn’t get out this morning,” Bogusz said.

Cancellations at 7 a.m. included a United Express flight to San Francisco and a WestJet flight to Vancouver. A 6:30 a.m. Air Canada flight to Toronto was delayed until 10 a.m.

For a brief window, the early morning fog lifted considerably “enough that flying has resumed,” Bogusz said just after 8 a.m.

Flights were getting back on schedule and airport officials were confident of clearer skies when, at 8:45 a.m., heavy fog had rolled back in over the airport.

“The fog appears to be thicker than it was 30 minutes ago,” Bogusz said. “At 8:45 a.m. as we speak, the fog is certainly thick. We hope it improves soon.”

The fog is forecast to lift.

Some flights may also be delayed because of extreme cold weather throughout other regions of B.C. and the rest of the country.
