An Oak Bay homeowner was attacked by a burglar when he interrupted the break-in Wednesday evening. The homeowner was left with serious injuries to his arm. The burglar fled but was arrested early this morning in Victoria.

Around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, the man returned to his home in the 800-block of St. Patrick Street when he realized an intruder was inside, said Oak Bay police spokesman Const. Rick Anthony.

The intruder fled and the homeowner tried to grab him but missed. The burglar then turned back on the homeowner and jabbed him with a crowbar. The homeowner struggled with the burglar, wrestled the crow bar away and the burglar ran off.

The man was left with a large gash on his arm that required stitches.

Police were called to the home and were able to identify a suspect who is known to police. A region-wide bulletin was broadcast to Greater Victoria police agencies and at 5:45 a.m. today the man was arrested downtown by Victoria police.

A 19-year-old man is in custody and will appear in court later today facing charges of aggravated assault, breaking and entering, theft, possession of break-in instruments and possession of stolen property.
