Premier Christy Clark, with student Darren Smith, announced a $13.5-million upgrade to North Island College's Campbell River campus on Jan. 24, 2017. The upgrades will provide new facilities for aircraft structures, professional cook and heavy duty mechanic students.

Students at North Island College in Campbell River will have new labs, workshops and classrooms thanks to $13.5 million in government funding.

Premier Christy Clark was on hand Tuesday to make the announcement: $5.75 million each from the provincial and federal governments and $2 million from North Island College.

The money will be used to construct new facilities for students in professional cooking, heavy duty mechanics and aircraft structure work.

Planned work includes a redesigned library, a simulation lab and a mock home care suite for practical nursing students, renovations to labs and a lounge for aboriginal students.

The neighbouring Timberline Secondary School, which shares the college campus grounds, will receive $1.5 million for upgrades as part of the project.

Construction is to begin this year and wrap up by spring 2018.

The North Island College improvements are the fifth in less than two weeks to be announced for Vancouver Island post-secondary institutions. Other funding includes the University of Victoria, $7 million; Vancouver Island University, $39.9 million; Camosun College, $48.5 million; and Royal Roads University, $21.5 million.

The federal share comes from the $2-billion Post Secondary Institutions and Strategic Investment Fund announced in 2016.
