No bail for Saanich man charged in wife’s death

Joseph Melvin DesRoches, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, was denied bail in B.C. Supreme Court on Friday.

Rosa Maria DesRoches, 77, was found shot to death at the couple’s Saanich home on March 18.

A man inside the house called 911 and said he had mental-health issues.

Joseph DesRoches, 72, will remain at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre.

The reasons for the bail decision are under a publication ban.

A preliminary hearing, the precursor to a trial, is scheduled to begin Sept. 29.

Joseph DesRoches was a Commissionaire at the time of the incident and had a long military career.

Rosa DesRoches was described by friends as a quiet woman who loved to garden.

The couple had two children.
