No bail for Duncan man accused of keeping woman captive

A Duncan man charged with beating a woman and holding her captive for three days has been denied bail. Kehar Sangha, 52, was arrested April 12 and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and unlawful confinement or imprisonment.

A Duncan man charged with beating a woman and holding her captive for three days has been denied bail. Kehar Sangha, 52, was arrested April 12 and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and unlawful confinement or imprisonment.

On Monday, Sangha applied for bail in Duncan provincial court. At the end of the proceedings, which are subject to a publication ban, Judge Parker MacCarthy refused to release him.

Sangha’s next court appearance has been scheduled for July 4. At that time, he must choose if he wishes to be tried in provincial court or B.C. Supreme Court.

According to North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, officers responding to a 911 call on the afternoon of April 11 in North Cowichan found a woman with severe injuries to her face.

A contractor told reporters he was working on a house near Herd Road when a woman who was badly beaten and in handcuffs came up and asked him for help. The woman told the contractor she had been held for three days and tortured.

RCMP officers spent the next day searching a property on Stamps Road, where the woman said she had been held.
