A design called “Pop-Up Ships” has been selected as the winning entry in the city’s Ship Point design competition.

Designed by architect Peter Carter and intern architect Marie-Claude Fares, the temporary installation will feature seating inspired by folded-paper boats, as well as a sculpture. It will be removed in October.

Nearly 50 submissions for a temporary pop-up public space at Ship Point were received. Thirteen were from local teams in Victoria, including one from a design class at Mount Douglas Secondary School, while others came from as far afield as New York, Denmark and Indonesia.

“I think the significant thing is the degree of interest — not just locally, but nationally and even internationally,” Mayor Lisa Helps said.

The proposals were judged by a jury of five on social interaction and connection, esthetics and originality, function and context, sustainability and feasibility.

Installation of Pop-Up Ships is expected to be completed by late July. The team will receive a $5,000 award and up to $35,000 for the design, build and installation.
