Nanaimo’s chief financial officer Victor Mema is on leave for an undetermined length of time.

His duties are being taken on by Laura Mercer, who is deputy financial officer, said John Van Horne, Nanaimo’s director of human resources.

The City of Nanaimo released a statement about city staffing with little information on March 2. It said that privacy laws prohibited it from commenting on personnel matters.

In the statement, Nanaimo said it had learned of an allegation that would be independently investigated immediately.

The city’s two most senior public servants are now on leave. Chief administrative officer Tracy Samra has been on leave since early February. The reason for her leave has not been explained.
