A Nanaimo RCMP officer had to draw his gun this week after tracking down a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

He caught up to the vehicle and its three occupants at Bowen Road and Dufferin Crescent on Tuesday.

“Affecting an arrest of an unknown subject from a stolen vehicle can be a high-risk scenario,” Nanaimo RCMP Sgt. Jon Stuart said in a statement. “Until the risks are known, each situation is treated as high-risk until it is known to be otherwise.

“In this case, there were three unknown persons.”

The stolen-vehicle report was received about 8 a.m. Tuesday, stating that a vehicle had been taken from a driveway in central Nanaimo.

Later that day, the officer spotted a vehicle on Bowen Road and confirmed that the licence plate matched that of the stolen vehicle.

Charges have since been laid against the driver of the stolen vehicle, while the two passengers were released.

Tyler Walter Orenchuk has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and driving while prohibited.
