A Nanaimo Mountie came to the rescue of a hot dog by smashing a window of a locked car.

The officer was told Saturday by a witness that the dog had been in the car for about 30 minutes. The owner could not be found, so the officer broke the glass. A veterinarian who examined the dog said it would have begun to go into organ failure if its internal temperature had gone up just two degrees.

The owner was apologetic. The dog has been returned to him while the SPCA investigates.

On Monday, Nanaimo council approved a bylaw with a possible $500 fine for failing to provide a dog with adequate ventilation.
