The City of Nanaimo wants the public to weigh in on its vision for a continuous walkway from Departure Bay to the Nanaimo River Estuary.

City staff want to hear from the public before a consultant team begins developing a plan.

The open-house-style events will provide background on current conditions and existing gaps in the walkway and allow the community to ask questions and provide input. Three events are scheduled:

• May 17, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kin Hut, 2730 Departure Bay Rd.;

• May 18, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Maffeo Sutton Park on Comox Road;

• May 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kin Hut.

“The vision for a continuous walkway from Departure Bay to the Nanaimo River Estuary has strong support from the public,” said Coun. Ian Thorpe.

He encouraged the public to attend an open house or visit the project website.

Last year, Nanaimo city council spent $964,000 to improve the walkway at Departure Bay. The original walkway was constructed in 1969.
