How about Trucky McTruckface?

The city of Nanaimo is embarking on a whimsical contest by asking residents to name its two new automated garbage trucks.

Citizens can enter until Sept. 22. A shortlist will be drawn up and residents can vote between Sept. 25 and 29.

Nanaimo residents can enter by logging on to the city’s website (nanaimo.ca/goto/NameTheGarbageTrucks) or stopping in person at the Nanaimo Recycles Trunk Sale on Sept. 9 at the Curling Club on Wall Street. The trucks will be at the sale.

Only residents of Nanaimo can enter.

“The only rule is to be original!” the city says in a news release. There is no limit to the number of times someone can enter.

A public vote in Britain to name a new research vessel put the name Boaty McBoatface on top, but the government decided it wasn’t a suitable name for a ship.

The two top entries in the Nanaimo contest will be invited to the Public Works department for an official naming ceremony. Winners each receive the grand prize of a six-month family recreation pass or a 12-month individual pass.

Trucks are called automated because they are equipped with joysticks to control arms that pick up the garbage containers. They go into service in October in central Nanaimo. The rest of the city will see similar service start in the summer of 2018.

Because the trucks run on compressed natural gas, each vehicle will produce 25 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than the existing trucks, which use diesel. Nanaimo will also save money on fuel costs, the city said.
