Fire crews in Nanaimo were called to a house fire in the 400 block of Selby Street early Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but no one was in injured in the blaze.

A photo from the scene shows flames and smoke affecting the front portion of the house. The fire was brought under control and extinguished.

“Our Fire Loss Prevention Division is on scene right conducting their investigation,” Nanaimo Fire Rescue Asst. Chief Greg Norman said Thursday.

The house suffered extensive damage. “It’s not habitable at this time,” Norman said.

In the capital region, fire crews are still working to contain a blaze on Mount Manuel Quimper near Sooke, which is believed to be human-caused. A campfire ban on Vancouver Island also went into effect Wednesday, much earlier than previous years.

According to the Coastal Fire Centre, there have been 44 wildfires in south coastal B.C. since April 1, all of them human-caused. In an average year, 30 to 40 per cent of wildfires in B.C. are caused by people.
