Musician, adoption advocate among Order of Canada’s newest members

A child welfare advocate living in Brentwood Bay and the former lead singer of the band Chilliwack have been admitted to the Order of Canada.
A child welfare advocate living in Brentwood Bay and the former lead singer of the band Chilliwack have been admitted to the Order of Canada.

Sandra Scarth, who has worked with children and youth and on adoption and adoption counselling, has been named member of the Order of Canada.

Bill Henderson, of Salt Spring Island, was also named a member for his work on copyright protection and as a musician and lead singer for Chilliwack.

The two were part of the 11-person B.C. contingent named as members of the Order of Canada on Canada Day by Gov. Gen. David Johnston.

Also honoured was Frances Oldham Kelsey, formerly of Victoria and now of London, Ont., for her efforts to protect public health and help end the use of thalidomide.

Leah Hollins, of Victoria, was recognized for her work to improve organ donations.

The Order of Canada was created in 1967 to recognize people for outstanding achievement, dedication to community or service to the nation. Since its creation, about 6,000 people have been named to the order.
