It's not The Breakfast Club that's being filmed at a Saanich High School on Sunday, but like Johh Hughes's coming-of-age classic, the lifetime movie Perfect High is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of high school.

Is there anyone in this town who doesn’t plan to watch the lead up to the big game on Super Bowl Sunday?

The producers of Perfect High hope there will be at least 150 film buffs out there who would rather appear in a Lifetime movie than devote their entire day to football fever.

“We’re looking for 150 students to come and volunteer as background from morning to early afternoon,” said associate producer Andrew Holmes.

Prizes, gift cards and refreshments are being offered as enticements to potential background performers who look between the ages of 16 and 22 for a pep rally sequence being filmed at a Saanich high school.

The film, produced by Vancouver-based Sepia Films, stars Bella Thorne, best known for her roles in the TV shows My Own Worst Enemy, Big Love and the Disney Channel series Shake It Up!; Daniela Bobadilla (Anger Management); Israel Broussard (The Bling Ring, Sons of Anarchy); Ross Butler (K.C. Undercover); and Lucia Walters (Center Stage: Turn it Up).

Inspired by a collection of true stories, Perfect High focuses on a competitive high school dancer who injures her knee and becomes addicted to prescription drugs.

“It’s a slippery slope,” says director Vanessa Parise. “It’s a cautionary tale about the problem of heroin use among suburban kids. The point of the movie is not to glorify drugs in any way, but to warn kids not to do it.”

Principal photography starts Sunday on the three-week shoot, with the capital region masquerading as suburban Chicago, said the New York-born director whose credits include Kiss the Bride and Jack and Jill vs. The World.

Holmes said there are three other days when a large number of background performers will be required.

If you’re interested, email Holmes at [email protected]. Be sure to provide your age and contact information, but no photo is required.

Specific details will be emailed to applicants, including the high school location, he said.

Perfect High is executive-produced by Sheri Singer (Read It and Weep), and produced by Vancouver-based Tina Pehme and Kim Roberts.

Vancouver Island-based crew members have been hired and local dancers cast as hip-hop dancers.
