Port Alberni RCMP are investigating after a 73-year-old motorist died from an apparent medical issue that is also believed to have caused him to collide with another vehicle.

Police said the man was travelling along 10th Avenue about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday when his car jumped a curb, went into the Burde Street intersection and hit an SUV that was stopped at a stop sign. The force of the collision sent the SUV into an adjacent yard, destroying a brick fence in the process.

The SUV driver was not injured. The 73-year-old died later in hospital.

The B.C. Coroners Service will assist police in the investigation.
