The southbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway were closed much of Friday four kilometres north of Mill Bay due to a serious house fire close to the roadway.
The call came in at 11:40 a.m. from an older home inhabited by a mother and her young son, said Mill Bay Fire Chief Ron Beck. “They got out real quick and easy,” he said, but their home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.
The highway reopened about 4:30 p.m.
