A man had to be extricated from a truck after it struck a utility pole Saturday afternoon on the Malahat.

The driver, who was alone in the truck, was taken to hospital with unknown injuries, said Malahat Fire Chief Tanya Patterson. She said the crash happened about 2:30 p.m., just south of Shawnigan Lake Road.

The man’s condition was not known.

Shawnigan RCMP told CHEK News the northbound vehicle crossed into the southbound lane before running into the pole, which was at the edge of a steep drop.

The highway remained open, but there was congestion as a result of the incident.
