A man was taken into custody and transported to hospital for assessment after a standoff Saturday.

Victoria police were called to Cecelia Road about 10 a.m. to check on the man’s well-being, said acting spokesman Bowen Osoko.

The man made some “concerning” statements and police received information that he might have a weapon or have access to firearms, Osoko said.

Because of the possibility of the man being armed, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and police negotiators were brought in.

The area was closed off and residents were asked to stay in their homes as a precaution.

“Negotiators worked with the man for several hours,” Osoko said. The man gave himself up without incident about 2:30 p.m.
