A man in his 40s died after a head-on crash in the 5900-block of Sooke Road late Friday afternoon.

A woman in another vehicle was taken to hospital and later discharged, Sooke RCMP said in a statement on Saturday.

RCMP were called to the collision shortly after 4:20 p.m. Friday. The first officer on the scene attended to the man, who had been driving a Dodge Caravan.

B.C. Ambulance Service attendants, who were on site almost immediately, found that the man had died from his injuries, RCMP said.

Sooke Fire Rescue used hydraulic equipment to free the woman, who had been driving a Jeep sport utility vehicle.

The man and woman were the only people in their vehicles.

“The investigation is ongoing. However, it appears from initial witness reports that the Dodge Caravan was travelling westbound when it crossed over the double solid line, colliding with the SUV travelling in the eastbound lane,” police said.

Sooke RCMP and the RCMP’s Vancouver Island Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services are looking into factors that led to the collision. The B.C. Coroners Service is also involved.

Traffic was diverted as Sooke Road was closed for several hours, opening again after about 11 p.m.
