Investigators do not believe a shooting in Courtenay was random.

A man is in hospital after a shooting in Courtenay on Friday.

The man was shot in the 1600 block of Piercy Avenue near 17th Street about 2:55 p.m.

Comox Valley RCMP and B.C. Ambulance responded, and the man was taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

“Investigators do not believe this was a random act, and efforts are being made to locate the persons responsible,” said Const. Rob Gardner, spokesman for Comox Valley RCMP.

One neighbour said he believes the shooting is linked to a home in the area.

“That house has been a problem for quite some time,” said the neighbour, who did not want to be identified.

A few weeks ago someone fired three shots at the home, one of which went through the window, he said.

The home is owned by Janette Sumner, according to B.C. Assessment records.

When reached at the home, Sumner said she did not hear the gunshots Friday afternoon.

“I heard nothing. I was in one of the rooms in the back of the house and I heard nothing and that’s exactly what I told the police,” she said.

She said she rents the suite but does not know if one of her tenants was the shooting victim.

Sumner confirmed the drive-by shooting.

“Yes, I have a bullet hole through my front room window,” she said. “It was the middle of the night.”

Police were called to investigate the shooting and are at the suite on a regular basis for what the neighbour suspects is drug activity. “There’s all kinds of people going there day and night,” he said.

Gardner said police are in the early stages of the investigation.

Police ask anyone who saw anything suspicious near 17th Street and Piercy Avenue on Friday to call them at 250-338-1321.
