A 44-year-old man underwent surgery for stab wounds Saturday after he was found bleeding outside a Qu’Appelle Street apartment building.

“Just before 8 a.m., we had a lady phone in to say a man was bleeding heavily in the parking area, and that he was claiming a man with a gun was in one of the apartments,” said Saanich police Staff Sgt. Chris Horsley.

The man said he had been shot, Horsley said, but it turned out that was not the case. “He did suffer significant stab wounds to the neck, shoulder, arms and hands.”

However, the possibility that there was a firearm at the scene generated a “significant” police response, Horsley said.

Once the building was secured, the man — a resident of the apartment building — was taken by B.C. Ambulance paramedics to hospital.

Witnesses told police a man had left the area on a bicycle and provided a description of him, Horsley said. “That fellow was arrested about a kilometre away on Burnside Road.”

Police said the man had a weapon — they did not say what kind — and had sustained a cut.

A 42-year-old Saanich resident was arrested for aggravated assault.
