Man found dead on Central Saanich waterfront

Police and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating after a man was found dead in a waterfront park in Central Saanich on Wednesday evening.

Update: A paddleboarder who spotted a 76-year-old man lying on a rocky Central Saanich beach Wednesday night tried CPR in an unsuccessful effort to revive him.

The paddleboarder called police about 6:30 p.m. after finding the man on a rocky beach near Newton Park, in the 8000-block of Lochside Drive.

The man, who lived in the area, appeared to have an injury to his forehead.

Ambulance paramedics and firefighters soon arrived to continue CPR but the man could not be resuscitated, said Central Saanich Police Chief Les Sylven.

The B.C. Coroners Service and police are investigating.

“Any time somebody dies suddenly in public, it’s considered suspicious until otherwise,” Sylven said.

The man has been identified but his name is not yet being released.

A man was found dead at a waterfront park in Central Saanich on Wednesday evening.

Central Saanich police told CHEK News that a woman who was paddleboarding noticed a man in distress on shore in a park at the end of Newman Road, near Mount Newton Cross Road.

The woman tried to help but found the man to be unresponsive when she got to him. Paramedics were called and were unable to revive the man.

“Central Saanich Police is investigating the death of a male, who is as yet unidentified,” said Sgt. Greg Johnson.

The B.C. Coroners Service said it is investigating the death of a man in his 70s.

Police are asking for anyone with information about what happened to contact them.
