The body of a man was found in a Nanaimo apartment Wednesday night prompting an intense police investigation.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene Wednesday in connection with the man’s death. He remains in custody. Formal charges have not been laid.

Police were called to a sprawling four-building apartment complex at 3250 Rock City Rd., near Departure Bay in Nanaimo, at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old man who called police “appeared to be experiencing an unknown issue,” said police spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.

Police went into his apartment and found the body of an older man.

The 27-year-old was arrested in connection to the death, O’Brien said.

The apartment and the area is secured and considered a crime scene while police investigate. Police expect to remain on the scene for most of the day.

The B.C. Coroners Service has been advised.

“The cause of death is unknown at this time,” O’Brien said.

The two men are about 20 years apart in age. Police have not confirmed what the relationship was between the two. However, “they are suspected to be related,” O’Brien said.

The apartment block in which the dead man was found is not one frequently visited by police nor is the man in custody known to police.
