A commissionaire who allegedly posted comments on Facebook last month suggesting the Masjid Al-Iman Mosque on Quadra Street be blasted with a rocket launcher has been charged with causing fear of injury or damage.
Daniel Kevin Speed is expected to appear in Victoria provincial court this morning.
The charge was sworn on Aug. 29.
It reads: "Azhar Omarjee has reasonable grounds to fear and does fear that Daniel Kevin Speed will cause damage to the property of Masjid-al-Iman Mosque - based on an incident that occurred on or about the 17th day of August."
Omarjee is the chairman of the B.C. Muslim Association's Victoria branch.
The controversial comments were posted in midAugust on the I Love Downtown Victoria Facebook page.
Speed's Facebook profile indicated he provided security for the Canadian Coast Guard and worked for the Department of National Defence.
In August, John Dewar, chief executive officer of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires for Victoria, the Islands and Yukon, said Speed had been placed on medical leave.
