Man, 82, on mobility scooter, dies in collision with vehicle in Courtenay

An 82-year-old Courtenay man died after his mobility scooter was struck by a vehicle on Wednesday.

An 82-year-old Courtenay man died after his mobility scooter was struck by a vehicle on Wednesday.

The man was struck while he was driving his scooter through a crosswalk at the intersection of Headquarters Road and Highway 19A in Courtenay about 3:40 p.m.

Comox Valley RCMP and B.C. Ambulance paramedics responded. The man was taken to hospital, but died of his injuries.

Police spokesman Const. Rob Gardner said the question of who had the right of way will be the focus of the investigation.

The intersection was closed for two hours as an RCMP collision reconstruction team gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses. The B.C. Coroners Service is also investigating.

The man’s name has not been released.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or has information relevant to the investigation to call Comox Valley RCMP and cite file number 2017-10815.
