Thunderstorms aren't common in our part of the world but it might happen today. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Greater Victoria, warning residents that thunderstorms and heavy downpours are liable to appear today.

The forecast for tonight has a 60 per cent chance of showers, the risk of thunderstorms, and a low of 11 C.

Severe thunderstorm alert has been ended for Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Greater Victoria, warning residents that thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected this evening.

Temperatures will hit a high of 19C, due to a humid flow of air over the south coast. Mixed with a Pacific cold front, the result will be a downpour of 15 to 25 millimetres.

There's a risk of hail in some areas from early evening until early morning. A severe thunderstorm alert is in effect for Metro Vancouver. There could be strong winds, large hail and heavy rain, Environment Canada said in a 5:09 p.m. update.

Eastern sections of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound and Whistler could be particularly hard hit.
The Seattle area was soaked by heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, starting around 6 p.m. The rain eased after about 20 minutes, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

Some flights at Sea-Tac Airport were delayed by the weather.
