Minor earthquake hits west of Port Hardy; no tsunami expected

Millions of earthquakes that are too small to be felt happen every year, while major earthquakes happen, on average, once per year, according to Natural Resources Canada.

About 12,000 Magnitude-4.0 earthquakes and 2,000 Magnitude-5.0 earthquakes occur per year, the federal agency says.
