An 82-year-old legally blind woman who was missing from Victoria General Hospital has been found safe.

Doris Lawson left the hospital on Wednesday morning.

Police and hospital staff were very concerned for her health and well-being, said West Shore RCMP spokesman Const. Alex Bérubé.

Island Health spokeswoman Kellie Hudson said that Lawson left the hospital of her own free will. Patient confidentiality prevents specific comment on the case, Hudson said.

“However, we can say it a patient is competent and doesn’t want to remain in hospital, [he or she] is allowed to leave,” she said. “We can’t keep anyone against their will, unless sectioned under the Mental Health Act.”
